Walt Disney World Fun Facts 11/23/2009
0 Comments

It's Not a Small World, After All . . . Covering 40 square miles, Walt Disney World Resort is about the size of San Francisco or two Manhattan islands. Of the more than 25,000 acres, less than 35 percent has been developed with a quarter designated as a wilderness preserve.

A Cast of Thousands . . . around 60,000 to be more precise. That's how many people it takes to create the magic at the Vacation Kingdom. Not surprisingly, Walt Disney World Resort is the largest single-site employer in the United States.

What the Well-Dressed Mouse Will Be Wearing . . . depends entirely on the occasion. Mickey Mouse himself has more than 290 different sets of duds, ranging from a scuba suit to a tuxedo. Minnie Mouse's wardrobe contains more than 200 outfits, including everything from a cheerleader ensemble to evening gowns.

Suds 'R Us . . . If you were to wash and dry one load of laundry every day for 52 years, you'd clean as much as the folks at Walt Disney World Laundry do in a single day. The cast members there launder an average of 285,000 pounds each day. In addition, between 30,000 and 32,000 garments are dry-cleaned daily.

Smile! . . . With millions of visitors annually, it's no wonder the Disney parks are among the most photographed places in the United States.  On any given day, Disney's PhotoPass photographers take between 100,000 and 200,000 photos of guests at Walt Disney World Resort. The PhotoPass service allows guests to view, share and order their Disney photos online and create Disney products such as PhotoBooks and mugs.

I'm Dreaming of a "Green" Christmas . . . The 1,500 Christmas trees at Walt Disney World Resort won't be the only "green" holiday delights this season as each Walt Disney World resort hotel will glow with new "conservation" lighting -- more than 700,000 LED lights in all. String the bulbs end to end and the strand would stretch for 96 miles or light the path from Jacksonville to Orlando, all while using 1/10th of the power of traditional incandescent bulbs.

Who's Still Thirsty? . . . More than 75 million Cokes are consumed each year at Walt Disney World Resort along with 13 million bottles of water. Guests also gobble 10 million hamburgers, 6 million hot dogs, 9 million pounds of French fries and more than 300,000 pounds of popcorn.

Ears to You . . . When laid end to end, there are enough of the famous "Mouse Ear" hats sold each year to stretch 175 miles or cover the head of every man, woman and child in Orange County, Fla. There are also enough Disney character T-shirts sold to put Mickey Mouse's smiling face on the chest of every resident of Montana.

Sign Here . . . If you stacked the number of standard autograph books sold annually, it would match the height of 200 Cinderella Castles. Add the Princess-style autograph books and, end to end, the books would reach 88 miles into space.

Gone But Not Forgotten . . . Walt Disney World Lost and Found is one busy place. Every day an average of 210 pairs of sunglasses are turned in and, since 1971, an estimated 1.65 million pairs of glasses have found their way into the "lost" bin. On an annual basis, Lost and Found cast members collect more than 6,000 cell phones, 3,500 digital cameras, 18,000 hats and 7,500 autograph books.

Curious Claims . . . According to long-time Lost and Found staffers, the most unusual items turned in have been a glass eye, a prosthetic leg and a potty trainer. Each, incidentally, was claimed (but not by the same person).

Busman's Holiday . . . More than 270 Walt Disney World buses transport guests around the Vacation Kingdom, making the Walt Disney World fleet the third largest in Florida behind Miami and Jacksonville.

Fly Me to the Moon . . . Since 1971, the total miles logged by Walt Disney World monorail trains would be equal to more than 30 round trips to the moon. One dozen new cars were put into service along the 14-mile beamway in 1990 as the original fleet received a well-deserved retirement.

Here's Looking (Down) At You . . . From the air, Walt Disney World Resort boasts a number of "heady" sights. For instance, the unique "Mouse Trap" on the 6th hole at the Magnolia golf course that looks like a famous corporate symbol. Over at Disney's Osprey Ridge Golf Club, Mickey's profile greets golfers on the large practice green. The famous mouse is the model for the courtyard and area in front of the Chinese Theater at Disney's Hollywood Studios.

Room With a View . . . Disney's Wedding Pavilion was designed to provide the bride and groom a view of Magic Kingdom's Cinderella Castle while standing at the altar.

THEME PARKS

Boulder Builder . . . Here's one to stump your friends with. How many stones are there in Cinderella Castle in Magic Kingdom? NONE. The whole shell of the building is fiberglass.

Green Thumb . . . More than 30 tons of fruits and vegetables grown at The Land pavilion at Epcot are served in Walt Disney World restaurants.

Finger Food . . . More than 1.8 million pounds of turkey drumsticks are consumed every year in four Disney theme parks -- Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios and Disney's Animal Kingdom.

Spaced Out . . . Spaceship Earth, the visual and thematic centerpiece of Epcot, weighs 16 million pounds -- more than three times that of a space shuttle fully fueled and ready for launch. The outer "skin" of Spaceship Earth is made up of 11,324 aluminum and plastic-alloy triangles. Also, did you know that rainwater never falls off the sphere? It's channeled into the ball and funneled away.

Water, Water Everywhere . . . If you emptied the water from The Seas with Nemo & Friends pavilion in Epcot into one-gallon milk jugs and laid them side by side, they would stretch from here to New Orleans, Knoxville or Raleigh -- 540 miles. And the recipe for the artificial seawater called for 27 truckloads of sodium chloride, or common table salt.

Ready, Aim . . . The fountain at Epcot Innoventions Plaza can shoot water 150 feet in the air -- within 30 feet of the top of Spaceship Earth. If all of the shooters were fired at once, there would be 2,000 gallons of water in the air.

IllumiNations . . . More than 26,000 feet of lights outline the Epcot World Showcase pavilions -- a string long enough to stretch across the Golden Gate Bridge more than six times.

It's a Tall World, After All . . . Expedition Everest at Disney's Animal Kingdom (just under 200 feet) is the tallest attraction at Walt Disney World Resort, followed by The Twilight Zone™ Tower of Terror at Disney's Hollywood Studios (199 feet), Magic Kingdom's Cinderella Castle (189 feet), Spaceship Earth at Epcot (183 feet), Space Mountain at Magic Kingdom (180 feet) and The Tree of Life at Disney's Animal Kingdom (145 feet).

What Big Ears You Have . . . The Earffel Tower, Disney's Hollywood Studios water tower landmark, would wear a hat size of 342 ¾.

Biggest Ever . . . Disney's Animal Kingdom encompasses 403 acres, the company's biggest theme park. The park's centerpiece is The Tree of Life, 14 stories high and 50 feet wide at its trunk.

Yeti, Guardian of the Mountain . . . The mammoth-sized Audio-Animatronics yeti in the Expedition Everest attraction at Disney's Animal Kingdom has a potential thrust, in all of its hydraulic cylinders combined, of slightly over 259,000 pounds force -- potentially more instantaneous power than a 747-400 airliner.

RESORTS

Strings 'n Things . . . Disney’s only full-time harpist entertains diners at Victoria & Albert’s, a grand dining experience at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.

Big Gulp
. . . It would take more than 20 million 12-ounce cans of Coca-Cola to fill one of the humongous Coke cups at Home Run Hotel in Disney's All-Star Sports Resort.

Tennis Anyone? . . . It would take nearly 9.5 million tennis balls to fill one of the tennis ball cans at Center Court Hotel in Disney's All-Star Sports Resort. That's enough to stretch from Walt Disney World Resort to Key West.

World's Largest . . . Stormalong Bay, Disney's Beach Club Resort swimming area, holds 750,000 gallons of water, making it the largest sand-bottom pool in the world.

Five-Legged Goat . . . The mosaic mural in the fourth-floor lobby of Disney's Contemporary Resort was created in 1971 with 1,800 one-square-foot tiles and took 18 months to construct. Look closely: there's a five-legged goat facing the monorail track.

Music to Your Eyes . . . The musical notes across the registration desk at Disney's Port Orleans Resort-French Quarter play out the first verse of "When the Saints Go Marching In."

Big Wheel Fit For a Big Kid . . . The giant Big Wheel in the 1970s courtyard of Disney's Pop Century Resort can "accommodate" a child rider who weighs up to 877 pounds (according to the "recommended child weight" sticker affixed to the gigantic toy).

Room Roulette . . . If you wanted to stay in all the guestrooms in all of the hotels and resorts currently open on Walt Disney World property (at a rate of one per night), it would take decades.

Disney's Wilderness Lodge: Cooking the Old-Fashioned Way 11/16/2009
0 Comments

Down-home cooking reflecting the spirit of the American pioneer tempts modern-day appetites at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge.

Mealtime traditions of the grand lodges of the late 1800s are captured, from the types of food and cooking methods to the dining-room ambiance of the lodge’s restaurants: chefs slow-smoking meats and serving up fresh fruit cobbler for dessert; high, wood-beamed ceilings, and dormers framing views of waterfalls, tall pines and Bay Lake.

Dining options at the 728-room lodge include: Whispering Canyon, a family-style cafe; Artist Point, the resort’s signature restaurant featuring Pacific Northwest cuisine; cafeteria-style Roaring Fork; Cub’s Den, a retreat for kids; and Territory Lounge.

Picture
Whispering Canyon Cafe

Overlooking the expansive, log-structured lobby, Whispering Canyon Cafe offers a family-style, all-you-can-eat feast in an American West motif.

“We hope to achieve a homelike feeling with old-fashioned cooking served family-style,” said Chef Lorene Vanetti.  “We are using natural cooking techniques -- smoking, grilling and barbecuing -- which are consistent with the time period the lodge reflects.”

Aromas of breakfast meats, home fries and scrambled eggs welcome hungry pioneers to breakfast. As high noon approaches, you can choose our family-style skillet lunch or pick from our full a la carte menu featuring hot and cold sandwiches, salads and a full-choice dessert board.

Suppertime features an all-you-can-eat sampling of oven-roasted chicken, pulled pork, smoked pork ribs and smoked brisket, served with salads, vegetables and home-made breads.

Picture
Cedar Plank Salmon at Artist Point
Artist Point
The beauty and the mystery of the American Northwest is recalled at Artist Point -- a specialty restaurant decorated with dramatic landscape art from the era. The eatery offers an elegant yet casual dining experience with a light wood design, a high-beamed cathedral ceiling, and dormer windows allowing natural lighting to illuminate. The windowed restaurant allows a panoramic view of the courtyard, waterfalls and Bay Lake.

Traditional Northwestern dinner specialties include cedar-roasted Pacific king salmon, braised buffalo short rib and pan-seared duck breast. All wines are from the Pacific Northwest.

Territory Lounge, Roaring Fork, Cub’s Den

Between Whispering Canyon and Artist Point is Territory Lounge, themed with Teddy Roosevelt in mind for his contribution to the National Park system. Territory Lounge is open daily, serving cocktails, specialty drinks and Pacific Northwest wines. Appetizers and snacks are available from 5-10 p.m.

The Cub’s Den is a children’s dining and entertainment facility offering video games, movies and fun food for kids, such as hot dogs, pizza and ice cream.

Roaring Fork Snacks and Arcade serves up grilled sandwiches and snacks -- cafeteria style -- 24 hours a day. Trout Pass, the resort’s pool bar, offers hot dogs and cold sandwiches.

Nestled in the back lobby is the library -- a cozy retreat for reading, writing letters or relaxing by the majestic three-sided stone fireplace.

Nine-year-old Orlando gals Taylor Moorman and Danica Escaño recently enjoyed a regal makeover session with fancy updo's, sparkling makeup and nails. Three pampering packages are available, including the Castle Package that offers a gorgeous green gown and crown like the one worn by Princess Tiana in the upcoming Walt Disney Pictures animated feature film, "The Princess and the Frog." Sailor Mickey Says, "Ahoy!"

The Sailor Mickey balloon will make his maiden voyage high above the streets of New York City as he represents Disney Cruise Line in the 83rd annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Millions of Parade goers and television viewers will see the Sailor Mickey helium balloon make its Parade debut, which also marks the first time Disney Cruise Line has been represented in the Parade.

It takes about 14,000 cubic feet of helium to inflate Sailor Mickey – dressed in his signature red shorts and yellow shoes, nautical blazer, sailor’s cap and perched atop a larger-than-life ship’s anchor. When inflated, the balloon stands approximately six stories tall. The Sailor Mickey balloon will be a part of the Macy’s Parade through 2011.

Sailor Mickey will also be Macy’s official holiday ambassador this year. Available exclusively as a collectible talking plush at all Macy’s stores across the U.S. and online at macys.com, Sailor Mickey will be on sale beginning Nov. 8 and through the holiday season.

The Sailor Mickey balloon and plush are being introduced as Disney Cruise Line prepares for the highly-anticipated launch of its Disney Dream cruise ship.

Guests can book sailings aboard the Disney Dream beginning Nov. 9, 2009.

“Mickey Mouse has always been a cherished character in Macy’s Parade history,” said Robin Hall, executive producer of Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. “From the very first Mickey Balloon that Walt Disney himself helped design to our brand new giant Sailor Mickey setting sail this Thanksgiving, Mickey Mouse is truly a Macy’s Parade star. To top it all off, Sailor Mickey will be Macy’s official holiday ambassador this year, with an exclusive special-edition plush of the navigator on sale at Macy’s that is sure to be a hit with our customers from coast-to-coast.”

The 83rd annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade steps off on Thursday, Nov. 26.

Fun Facts:
• Mickey Mouse was last seen in the Macy's Parade in 2000 as Bandleader Mickey.
• The Sailor Mickey balloon is approximately 61 feet high, 33 feet wide and 48 feet long. That’s more than six stories tall!

• It will take about two hours to fully inflate and secure him under a Macy's balloon net.
• The Sailor Mickey balloon has 52 handling lines and will be guided by a team of 70 volunteers.

Starting today, Verizon Wireless customers have exclusive access to Mobile Magic, the first Disney-developed mobile application that enables them to easily navigate Disney parks on both coasts, providing helpful and timely information.  With either a swipe of their fingers or the touch of a few keys, guests can access an array of park features on their Verizon Wireless phones, including:

  • Updated attraction wait times and FASTPASS return times for the park they are in

  • Trivia games to play against other parks guests
New content will continue to be added to the Mobile Magic application as the attractions and opportunities at the Disney parks and resorts continue to evolve.

Download and message charges may apply.  Airtime or megabyte data charges may apply when browsing, downloading and using certain applications.

Mobile Magic, marking a first in both the travel and mobile industries, is the outgrowth of a new multi-year relationship between Disney Parks and Verizon Wireless aimed at enhancing the park experience.  Verizon Wireless continues to invest in its nationwide wireless network, and the relationship with Disney means Verizon Wireless users will benefit from further enhancements to the Verizon Wireless network in the parks.

Guests are currently using Verizon Wireless’ technology with Disney’s Kim Possible World Showcase Adventure, an ultra-interactive attraction at Epcot at Walt Disney World Resort.

Guests who are not Verizon Wireless customers can access select information, such as park hours, attraction information, entertainment schedules and dining information, through the new m.disneyworld.com and m.disneyland.com mobile Web sites with their browser-enabled phones.

Magic Kingdom Eats: From Quick Bites to Lunch with Royalty! 11/11/2009
0 Comments

Magic Kingdom is best known for its classic attractions and favorite Disney characters, but the park also has its share of great family meals.

Leisurely Fare

Cinderella’s Royal Table.  One of the most coveted dining reservations is for breakfast or lunch with the Disney princesses at this enchanting restaurant in Cinderella Castle.  (Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother greets dinner guests.)  The majestic dining room is a magical experience for little ones, with leaded windows, coats of arms and medieval flags – and a visit to each table by Disney “royalty.”  The signature dish is Major Domo’s Favorite Pie, with shredded beef simmered in cabernet sauce with mashed potatoes and topped with pastry.  For little ones, there’s a minor Domo version of the popular entrée.

Liberty
Tree Tavern.  In Liberty Square opposite the riverboat landing, Liberty Tree Tavern offers all-American fare.  For lunch, pot roast in cabernet sauce, roast turkey with herb dressing, or a favorite cheeseburger.  Dinner is all-you-care-to-eat roast turkey, carved beef, pork loin, herb stuffing, macaroni and cheese and mashed potatoes.  The restaurant is a re-creation of an 18th century American inn, with six small dining rooms with Colonial artifacts.

Crystal Palace.  Winnie the Pooh and his pals are the stars at this venerable Magic Kingdom restaurant inspired by San Francisco’s Conservatory of Flowers.  A generous buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner includes favorites such as prime rib, salmon, clam chowder, dozens of salads and sweets.  Little ones get their own buffet with chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter and jelly and pizza.

Plaza Restaurant
.  Tucked on the side street on Main Street, U.S.A., around the corner from the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor, this eatery is a respite from the hustle and bustle of Magic Kingdom – no Disney characters, no entertainment, just a quiet, Art Nouveau-inspired spot.  The grilled reuben is a longtime favorite, as well as the chicken strawberry salad.  But the biggest sellers are sundaes, floats and hand-dipped milkshakes.

Tony’s Town Square
.  Inspired by the Disney classic “Lady and the Tramp,” Tony’s features spaghetti, chicken Parmesan, flatbreads and other Italian specialties.  The best seats are on the airy patio with a view of Town Square.

For a Fast Bite
Land to Land in Magic Kingdom, quick-service has a variety of great tastes to please every guest.

On Main Street, U.S.A., Casey’s Corner is the spot for giant hot dogs and corn dog nuggets and fries, with tables on the sidewalk where a pianist entertains with old-fashioned tunes.  In Adventureland, El Pirata Y El Perico (the Pirate and the Parrot) offers beef and vegetarian tacos and taco salad.  Nearby in Frontierland, Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Café serves burgers (including vegetarian), a chicken wrap and chicken salad – with a terrific toppings bar.

Next is Liberty Square, where Columbia Harbour House is the only place in Magic Kingdom for fried fish, but you also can get tuna on a toasted multigrain bun and a hummus sandwich with tomato and broccoli slaw with a side of vegetarian chili or New England clam chowder.  In Fantasyland, Pinocchio Village Haus is a kid favorite with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, macaroni and cheese and salads for mom and dad.

In Tomorrowland, Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe is a great spot for picky eaters, with three counters: one with rotisserie chicken, barbecued ribs and salad; one with burgers and hot dogs; one with Caesar salads, wraps and barbecue sandwiches.  Tomorrowland Terrace Noodle Station has an Asian flair with noodle bowls, beef and broccoli with steamed rice and sushi.

Throughout the park there are walk-up windows for everything from the legendary Dole Whip at Aloha Isle in Adventureland to ice cream at Mrs. Potts’ Cupboard in Fantasyland and funnel cakes at Sleepy Hollow in Liberty Square.

With so many restaurant choices at Magic Kingdom, you will not go hungry but make sure and make your dining reservations as soon as you book your magical vacation as Disney has extended their dining reservation window for the leisurely fare restaurants to 180 days in advance.  Book with us and we'll do all the planning and advanced dining reservations for you!

Disney's Single Rider Attractions 11/09/2009
0 Comments

Picture
There are currently 3 rides at Walt Disney World that offer a single rider queue line. This is a great option to reduce your wait times at these very popular attractions with wait times that can easily exceed 60 minutes.

What 3 rides offer the single rider option?
  • Expedition Everest at Disney's Animal Kingdom
  • Test Track at Epcot
  • Rock 'n' Roller Coaster at Disney's Hollywood Studios

How does the single rider line work?

When you walk up to these 3 attractions, you will see a sign for single riders,  just join in on this queue. The great thing is, even if you are traveling with others, you can still enjoy time together in this queue line before you reach the ride.  Once you reach the ride, the Disney castmember will direct you to an open seat on that particular ride. This is the time were you may be separated from your party so make sure you chose a location to meet afterwards--a good place to meet is where your photo (that was taken on the ride) can be viewed and purchased.

If you don't mind riding with someone you may not know, than this is a great option to reduce your wait times.  Next time your visiting Disney World, take advantage of these single rider lines!

Contact us for more information on rides at Walt Disney World and to book your magical vacation!

Disney's Hollywood Studios Must See, Must Do List! 11/06/2009

Top 5 Must See, Must Do at Disney's Hollywood Studios!

Picture
1. TOY STORY MIDWAY MANIA
My favorite ride at Disney's Hollywood Studios is this 4D midway style game playin' adventure where you are competing for a virtual prize at the end of the ride. I am a very competitive person so this ride is right up my alley and is fun for the whole family too!
I recommend getting to the parks at least 20 minutes before they open, enjoy the fun opening show they have and then head straight to Toy Story Mania.  Grab a fastpass first and then ride standby. Now you can enjoy this ride twice in one day.  Such a great tip as fastpasses for this ride can and do run out by mid-afternoon.

Picture
2. ROCK 'N' ROLLER COASTER STARRING AEROSMITH
This high energy "road trip" coaster starring Aerosmith has wild twists, turns, and loops.  Hang on-we're going for a ride through the back streets of tinseltown!  Grab a fastpass for this ride as well if you want to ride it twice or use the single rider line with shorter queues.  Disney World has very few rides that offer the single rider option so take advantage of it here!

Picture
3. 50's PRIME TIME CAFE
This is such a fun restaurant and one of my favorite meals at Disney. They serve classic American comfort food (fried chicken, meatloaf, pot roast, etc.) in a TV-themed setting.  The waiters and waitresses treat you like family and really add to the "flavor" of this restaurant.  The portions here are large too and can be easily split plus you'll want to save room for their yummy desserts like Dad's Brownie Sundae that is topped with caramel corn! Ask for a "tv table" to watch clips from popular 50's sitcoms like "Father Knows Best" and of course the original "Mickey Mouse Club".  Reservations are recommended and can be made 180 days in advance.

Picture
4. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST-LIVE ON STAGE
Disney does such a phenomenal job with this live Broadway style show.  This 30 minute live show is offered several times each day so check your times guide and make sure you fit it in your schedule.

Picture
Last but certainly not least...
5. FANTASMIC!
This 25 minute nightime spectacular show stars Mickey Mouse and uses lasers, lights, dancing fountains, special effects and characters galore.  This evening show does not show every night so make sure and check with us for the best itinerary to fit Fantasmic! into your vacation!  A great option to view Fantasmic without dealing with the crowds is to reserve The Fantasmic Dinner Package. This package offers 3 tier packages with dinner before the show and reserved seating during the show!  Reservations for this package are requried and can be made 180 days in advance.
