T-Rex Cafe at Downtown Disney 07/06/2011

Picture
T-Rex is not only a restaurant at Downtown Disney at the Walt Disney World Resort but it also offers shopping and pre-historic discovery!    The 600-seat restaurant, operated by Landry's Restaurants, combines table-service dining and retail in an interactive prehistoric environment built around water, fire and ice.  Guests at "T-Rex" can enjoy life-size animatronic dinosaurs, cascading waterfalls and bubbling geysers while choosing from a menu including appetizers, salads, pastas, sandwiches and desserts. T-Rex is not on Disney's Dining Plan but it sure is worth paying out of pocket for this meal. (Gene Duncan, photographer)

Restaurant Marrakesh at Epcot 07/01/2011

Restaurant Marrakesh serves flavorful specialties, using a long list of herbs and spices including saffron, a key ingredient in many Moroccan dishes. The menu features couscous with chicken, lamb or a variety of garden vegetables. A favorite appetizer is bastilla, or fried pastry, that combines layers of the pastry with chicken strips seasoned with almonds, powdered sugar and cinnamon. The dessert menu includes bastilla au lait etamandes, with cream and toasted almonds.

Best Disney Restaurants: Guest Review, Part 2 06/24/2011
1 Comment

Today we continue our guest review of Disney's Best Restaurants focusing on restaurants at Epcot.  You can check out Part 1 here. Take it away, Sarah:
Picture
My quick service pick for EPCOT is The Sunshine Season Food Fair in The Land Pavilion in Futureworld:

This place was one of my family’s favorite places to eat when my brother and I were young. Since we never could agree on anything (which resort to stay at, which park to go to, which ride to ride, and especially where to eat) this place was great because with all of the different stations with so many options everyone could get exactly what they wanted (and that usually includes macaroni and cheese for me).

Picture
Fine dining at EPCOT:

While there are incredible menus every time you turn around, my must taste choice is Nine Dragons in the China Pavilion in The World Showcase.

I always get the traditional jasmine tea (but I always add sugar). My party likes to order the Nine Dragons Family Dinner Set. Each guest gets to choose their own soup, entrée, and ice cream. Everyone gets to choose what sounds good to them and the real reason I love this restaurant is that the portions are big enough that my family always shares so you get to taste a little of everything. The honey-sesame chicken is my favorite.
Don’t be afraid to try the strawberry-red bean or caramel-ginger ice cream. I know the sound strange but they were made by Disney chefs so you know they definitely taste good.

Picture
My vote for best character dining experience at EPCOT is the Princess Storybook Breakfast at Akershus Royal Banquet Hall in the Norway Pavilion in the World Showcase (what a mouthful):

Immerse yourself into a classic fairytale and enjoy American breakfast favorites (some with a Norwegian twist!) This restaurant is designed to look like the real castle in Oslo, Norway and makes a perfect backdrop for all those pretty pictures with your favorite princesses.  Rather than wasting valuable attraction riding time waiting in long lines only to be told that Snow White will be back in another twenty minutes, meet all of the princesses while you eat giving you more time to ride test track again.

Best Disney Restaurants: Guest Review, Part 1 06/15/2011

There are over 125 restaurants at Walt Disney World and that’s not even counting the fabulous ones at the Disney resorts! So how do you choose just three a day? I’m here to help. I have broken up the eateries into categories (quick service, fine dining, and character dining) and I’ll walk you through my favorites and in my opinion, if you’ve never been to these, you’ve missed out on some good experiences. Lets break this up into parks so this isn’t so long. Today we will focus on Magic Kingdom!

Picture
Must try restaurants at Magic Kingdom:

My Favorite Quick Service Restaurant: Now, this is a tough category. There are so many quick service options at the Magic Kingdom. And I choose Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Café

Conveniently located in Frontierland and near both Adventureland and Liberty Square, Pecos Bill is an easy spot if you're on your way to Big Thunder Mountain or just need a place to dry off after your trip down Splash Mountain.I always get the #1 BBQ Pork Sandwich and chili cheese frys, but of course there are options for everyone. Casey’s Corner Hot Dogs on Main Street U.S.A. came in a very close second.

Picture
Tony’s Town Square Restaurant gets my vote for best fine dining.
Located on the right of Main Street U.S.A. as you enter the park, Tony’s Town Square was inspired by one of my many favorite classics, Lady and the Tramp. This Italian restaurant has a wonderful menu including calamari, minestrone, baked ziti, calzones, lasagna, ravioli, my favorite, grilled salmon, and of course spaghetti. Yummy deserts include gelato, tiramisu, cheesecake, and a fabulous pistachio crème brulee that is to die for.
The walls are decorated with many things that might find a home in a real Italian kitchen along with still portraits of the lovable scenes that inspired the restaurant. In the middle of the dining room sits Lady herself with none other than her love, the Tramp, overlooking a beautiful fountain.

Picture
My favorite character dining: The Crystal Palace
It’s a beautiful building with an even better view of well kept greenery and Cinderella’s Castle. Feel free to load up your plate and go back for seconds of assorted fine American cuisine and enjoy the Victorian elegance that surrounds you. Watch as Disney chefs prepare your food in the live on stage kitchen.

My favorites include the made-to-order omelets, breakfast pizza, and double chocolate brownies. But of course the real reason to eat here is to meet Winnie the Pooh and his friends! As wonderful as the food and atmosphere are, the real magic begins when Pooh Bear, Piglet, Eeyore, and don’t forget, Tigger come out to join you. Be sure to pack your camera because you will not want to miss getting those memorable interactions on film.
(Yep! That's me at Crystal Palace with Winnie the Pooh when I was only 5 years old!)

Which dining locations are your favorite at Magic Kingdom?  We would love to hear your thoughts!

Changes to 2012 Disney Dining Plans 06/13/2011
2 Comments

Looks like there are some changes coming to the 2012 Disney Dining Plans!

Let's start with Disney's Quick Service Dining Plan. Currently, for 2011 packages, guest who select this dining plan will receive 2 quick service meals and 2 snacks per person per night of your stay plus one refillable mug per person.  Here is the change to the 2012 Disney Quick Service Dining Plan:
Picture
As you can see above, with the 2012 Quick Service dining plan, you will still receive 2 quick service meals per person per night of your stay but now you will only receive 1 snack per person per night of your stay.

For Disney's Dining Plan (Basic Dining), there has been a much needed addition!  One refillable drink mug per person will be included in the 2012 Disney Dining Plan!  See below for details:
Picture
And there appears to be no change to the dining elements for Disney's Deluxe Dining Plan for 2012:
Picture
Disney's Deluxe Dining Plan will continue to offer 3 full meals and 2 snacks per person per night of your stay plus the refillable drink mug!

So what do you think of these changes?

Disney Dining: Unique Dining Spots 05/31/2011

Picture
Disney World not only knows how to make theme parks magical, but they also know how to make dining experiences more magical. If you are looking for more than a meal while on your Disney vacation,  here are a few of the unique dining spots that you won't want to miss:

Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant: You will be seated in flashy 1950's era cars while watching 1950's era drive-in movies.  This 250-seat restaurant at Disney's Hollywood Studios makes you believe it's dark outside -- fiber-optic stars twinkle overhead and the cars are lined up to face the giant drive-in movie screen. Outrageous sci-fi movie clips run continuously. Entrees include sandwiches, barbecued pork ribs and chef's salad.

Coral Reef Restaurant: Located in The Seas with Nemo & Friends pavilion at Epcot, this is the only dining room in the world next to a 5.7-million-gallon aquarium. Diners are entertained by 5,000 inhabitants of the saltwater tank -- barracuda, angelfish, sharks, dolphins, rays and even humans diving to feed the fish. The menu features fresh fish and shellfish -- but none of the pavilion's undersea inhabitants are on the menu.

50's Prime Time Cafe: The waiters holler for you to take your seat, and ask if you've washed your hands in this Disney's Hollywood Studios restaurant. You'll feel like you're in a '50s sitcom with Formica tables, pull-down lamps and knickknacks like grandma used to collect but don't put your elbows on the table-or better yet, do and see what happens. Pot roast, chicken pot pie and meatloaf with mushroom gravy are standouts.

T-Rex: A Prehistoric Family Adventure: Enter a world of prehistoric creatures at T-Rex: A Family Adventure at Downtown Disney Marketplace. The dinosaur-themed family eatery serves up pizzas, pastas, sea bass and more, and features life-sized animated dinosaurs that dwell among bubbling geysers, waterfalls and a fossil dig site

California Grill: You’ll think you’re in San Francisco or L.A. in this upscale hot spot high atop Disney’s Contemporary Resort. The view is stupendous, the cuisine is extraordinary and the wines are outstanding. It’s hard to decide which is more fun: watching the energetic chefs in the open kitchen, or a sunset over Magic Kingdom.

Disney World Cake Hotline 04/16/2011

Picture
Yes, you read that right! Disney World actually has a cake hotline you can call to order a speciality cake to help you celebrate your special occasion. Much like the Cake Boss or Charm City Cakes, Disney bakers will whip up extraordinaire cakes with amazing fondant decor and toppers.

During my recent visit to Walt Disney World, I pre-ordered what Disney calls their Cinderella Slipper Dessert, for my mom's 70th birthday celebration at Cinderella's Royal Table.   The slipper is made from your choice of white or milk chocolate with a filling of chocolate mousse. For only $12.95 this is a great way to add a little magic to your celebration.

Disney also offers pre-made celebratory cakes at most of the sit down restaurants on property.   These pre-made cakes can be ordered right at the podium of the restaurant with no advance notice!

To contact Disney's Cake Hotline, call 1-407-827-CAKE or Contact Us for more information!
