Jan 23 marked the start of the Chinese New Year! 2012 is the Year of the Dragon and according to the Chinese zodiac, dragons often do things in grand fashion. This larger-than-life LEGO creature is no different at 30ft. in length and can be spotted in Village Lake across from the LEGO Imagination Center at Downtown Disney Marketplace at Walt Disney World Resort .  He’s technically a sea serpent but no less commanding a presence in his watery home. Happy new year!

Where is Downtown Disney® located and how can I get there?
The Downtown Disney® area is located inside the Walt Disney World® Resort. Motor coach transportation is available from all Walt Disney World® Resorts. Parking is complimentary and located throughout the Downtown Disney® district.

I heard that Cirque de Soleil® created an exclusive show for the Walt Disney World® Resort. Where can I find this?
Cirque de Soleil® La Nouba™, a spectacular show created especially for Walt Disney World® Resort, can be seen exclusively at Downtown Disney® West Side. La Nouba means "to live it up", which you're sure to do at this show where every member of the family will be captivated by its feats of physical daring and acrobatics. This mesmerizing theatrical experience transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary. A must see for anyone who wants a truly dazzling evening of spectacular entertainment. Performances are held from Tuesday through Saturday at 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. There are no performances on Sundays and Mondays (and certain block out dates throughout the year).

Downtown Disney guests will get a bird’s-eye view of Walt Disney World Resort and beyond as they soar to rarified heights at Downtown Disney West Side near Pleasure Island. Characters in Flight, operated by Aerophile, is a giant tethered gas balloon with a whimsical Disney design featuring a dozen of Disney’s animated flying characters in silhouette such as Mary Poppins, Peter Pan and Dumbo. Characters in Flight rises into the sky carrying up to 30 passengers to a height of 400 feet. Flight times and availability depend on weather conditions. Riders can catch flights 7 days a week, adults $16, and $10 for children ages 3-9. Availability is on first-come, first-serve basis.

When guests walk into the newly renovated LEGO Imagination Center at Downtown Disney Marketplace, they not only find a store with more space but also more options to build and create. The recently completed extensive renovation at the Walt Disney World Resort location has added nearly 3,500 square feet to the overall space. Along with a separate playroom inside the store and new Master Builder Bar, the 3,000-square-foot outside play area is filled with LEGO blocks.

New iconic LEGO models now surround the exterior of the store, with favorite Disney— Pixar characters such as Buzz Lightyear and Disney classics Snow White, the Seven Dwarfs and others near each entrance. Guests also will find the classic LEGO dragon and guest family in the mix. Once inside, there’s a LEGO model of Woody tipping his hat.

Store hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday

Build your own roller coaster at the DisneyQuest CyberSpace Mountain attraction – Bill Nye the Coaster Guy walks guests through the design process where they choose from three different speeds, three world settings (fire, ice or outer space) and an infinite number of track combinations. The roller coaster of your dreams (or nightmares!) can do flips, corkscrews and even wild maneuvers such as a loop that flies off the tracks. A digital card tracks guests’ personal coasters and the simulator re-creates it both visually and physically.  

I have personally tried this experience at Downtown Disney and although I am a bit claustrophobic, I found it to be a really fun activity!

Downtown Disney guests must be 51" to ride.

The Downtown Disney Market Place and West Side also celebrate the Christmas Season with meet and greets with Santa, live entertainment and beautiful decorations.  From November 19-December 24, you can meet Santa from 12 PM-10 PM.  Besides Santa, there will be lots of live entertainment including choirs from local schools, Dj’s with dance parties, and much more.  Bonus, the Downtown Disney Marketplace is free!!

For pictures with Santa, you can either use your own camera or the Disney Photographer can take pictures for PhotoPass.  Besides Santa and live entertainment, you may want to hit the train for younger kids or the carousel for everyone else.  To pick up your favorite Christmas souvenirs, stop by the Disney Christmas store to get an ornament, stocking, or just fun Disney holiday souvenir.

You can also enjoy entertainment throughout the holiday at the Downtown Disney Marketplace theater next to the World of Disney.  Don’t forget all of the great shopping around Downtown Disney including the 12 Days of Christmas store at the Downtown Disney Marketplace.

A sprinkle of pixie dust and a little help from the fairy godmother is all it takes for little princesses to feel like the newest Disney princess, Princess Tiana, at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. Nine-year-old Orlando gals Taylor Moorman and Danica Escaño recently enjoyed a regal makeover session with fancy updo's, sparkling makeup and nails. Three pampering packages are available, including the Castle Package that offers a gorgeous green gown and crown like the one worn by Princess Tiana in the upcoming Walt Disney Pictures animated feature film, "The Princess and the Frog."   • La Nouba comes from the French phrase "faire la nouba", which means to party, to live it up. 
  • La Nouba transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary, engaging the imagination from beginning to end with opulent sets, brilliant choreography, theatrical lighting and provocative live music.
  • La Nouba enjoyed its 4000th performance on June 12, 2007. (The 6:00 p.m. show).
  • The 90-minute performance (no intermission) plays at 6:00 p.m. & 9:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The show is dark on Sunday and on Monday.
  • Tickets are $65, $81, $99 and $114 for adults (plus tax) and $52, $65, $79 and $91 for children ages 3 to 9 (plus tax). 
    • About the theater...
  • The 1,671-seat theater is the first freestanding permanent structure ever built for Cirque du Soleil. Set Designer Michel Crête of Cirque du Soleil, Michel Aubé of Scéno Plus, Walt Disney Imagineering, and the architects of the Rockwellgroup of New York collaborated on the overall design of the building.
  • The theater is located at Downtown Disney-Westside.  Complimentary Disney transportation is available to Downtown Disney to all visitors staying at a Disney owned/operated hotel.

  • The average age of the La Nouba cast is 31 1/2.
