True Disney foodies know you haven’t arrived until you’ve dined at the crème de la crème of restaurants – Victoria & Albert’s at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.  But now the top-rated dining room has a new “must do”: the gorgeous Queen Victoria’s Room.

Queen Victoria’s Room is behind closed doors just off the main dining room.  With just four tables, restaurant manager Israel Perez promises attention to your every whim.  They’ve brought back French gueridon service – a gueridon is a fancy rolling cart that goes from table to table for customized service and “wow” factor – a flourish of Himalayan sea salt atop your filet, a decadent wine sauce or a lavish display of cheese, for instance.

Anyone who’s tasted Chef Scott Hunnel’s exquisite creations knows this is a memorable affair.  How often do you savor perfectly seared Kurobuta pork tenderloin and belly, or b
utter-poached lobster with bisque and lobster roe foam?  And vegans and vegetarians are Hunnel’s favorite challenge.  The sommelier happily will pair something delicious with each of the 10 courses.  Yes, 10 courses, but they’re small.  Still, plan on three to four hours of leisurely dining.

It’s worth the price of a baby-sitter – no kids under 10 are allowed in the dining room, so you’re guaranteed an evening of blissful quiet.  Be advised, men must wear jackets (tie optional) for this formal affair.

You’ll float out the door with a long-stemmed rose for women and personalized menus for everyone to carry home.  Cost for Queen Victoria’s Room is $200 per person, plus $95 for wine pairings.  The restaurant has its own reservation line, 407/939-3862.

Reservations for Queen Victoria’s Room are being accepted now for this special dining experience starting Feb. 5, 2010.  There is just one seating nightly.

Nemo's Reef Water Play Area
An elaborately themed interactive sports deck, whimsical water play area, and relaxing poolside oasis for adults join the first-ever shipboard water coaster – AquaDuck – to provide fun in the sun for guests sailing on the newest Disney Cruise Line ship, the Disney Dream.

These additions, announced today, one year from the maiden voyage of the Disney Dream, offer new experiences for guests of all ages.

Goofy’s Sports Deck
On Goofy’s Sports Deck, the magic tees off on deck 13 with Goofy’s Golf – a miniature golf course where “lessons” featuring Goofy and his son, Max, lead guests through nine themed holes of wacky fun. Each hole offers special golf instructions – with a goofy twist. Lessons include:
• “Handling a dog leg” – Guests avoid a fire hydrant and use Pluto’s dog bone to guide them to the hole.
• “Stuck in the rough” – Goofy shows golfers how to avoid the tall turf and steer clear of a lawn mower.
• “Reading the green” – Stacks of books and a large magnifying glass are obstacles to circumvent on this undulating green.
• “Attacking the green” – Yo ho, yo ho! Golfers and landlubbers take a swashbuckling approach to sinking their putt on this pirate-themed hole.

Guests can choose to use the Goofy or Max tee on each hole, offering twice the fun. Family-friendly competitions and tournaments will keep the excitement on par while quirky golf clubs, some crooked and bent, will challenge golfers to stay on course. Goofy and Max may even swing by to interact with guests and offer some tips on club selection, stance or just goofing around.

Also on Goofy’s Sports Deck, two digital sports simulators provide a variety of virtual game experiences such as soccer, tennis, basketball, golf and more. With the simulators, guests can kick, swing and throw, participating in favorite high-action sports without the hassle of chasing the ball.

Max’s Courts are two mini-sized sports courts for little ones to enjoy soccer, basketball or group play. There’s full-court basketball that may also be transformed into a mini soccer pitch or volleyball court, plus table tennis and foosball tables. A walking track rings Goofy’s Sports Deck.

Nemo’s Reef
Little ones discover oceans of fun at this fanciful water-play area overflowing with pop jets, bubblers and lovable underwater friends like Nemo, Dory, Marlin and other favorites from the Disney•Pixar film, “Finding Nemo.”

Shaded for protection from the sun and featuring a soft wet-deck surface, the 1,500-square-foot Nemo’s Reef is a place for children to cool off and play among colorful, interactive figures that move and spray water. Children will delight as they splash alongside Nemo swimming in a sea anemone, glide down a pint-sized water slide shaped like Mr. Ray and frolic near Pearl the octopus who “inks” herself with a mist of water. Kids can even get soaked in a water curtain that undulates back and forth like the EAC (East Australian Current).

Nemo’s Reef is surrounded by a glass enclosure, with a main guest entrance and a wheelchair-accessible entrance.

Quiet Cove Pool and Cove Bar
Reserved exclusively for guests 18 and older, the Quiet Cove Pool and Cove Bar is a retreat for adults to sunbathe and swim, indulge in a cool drink or enjoy a relaxing dip in a nearby hot tub overlooking the ocean.

One of three fresh-water pools on the Disney Dream, Quiet Cove Pool features varying depths for taking a dip, sunbathing in comfort and enjoying a poolside cocktail. A series of connected circular pools includes a 4-foot-deep plunge pool and a 6-inch-deep sunbathing pool with built-in loungers and a mister. Guests also can splash up to Cove Bar, which is part of the pool, and sip a refreshing beverage.

Nearby, on the sides of deck 11, guests can soak in a whirlpool hot tub while overlooking the ocean. Four “infinity” whirlpool hot tubs – two for families and two just for adults – provide spectacular views of the ocean beyond.

AquaDuck and More!
The Disney Dream will feature the world’s first shipboard water coaster – AquaDuck – which will sweep guests away on an exhilarating high-speed flume ride featuring twists, turns, drops, uphill acceleration and river rapids – all while traversing the upper decks of the ship.

Donald Pool is the place for families to gather and enjoy all of the activities up on deck. Overlooking Donald Pool is the giant Funnel Vision LED screen – more than 30 feet wide and 18 feet high – showing Disney films and other live broadcast events. A retractable floor extends over the pool, providing an ideal dance floor for deck parties.

Continuing a favorite feature of the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, the Disney Dream will also have a Mickey Pool for children. The shape of Mickey Pool resembles the beloved Disney character, and an oversized version of Mickey’s hand supports a yellow winding slide that splashes down near the pool.

As an added convenience for parents with children of different ages, Donald Pool, Mickey Pool and Nemo’s Reef are all located within the same vicinity, on deck 11 between the forward and aft funnel.

During my recent visit to Walt Disney World, I stopped into Disney's Contemporary Resort to check out Contempo Cafe and I'm sure glad I did! This quick service eats was the best lunch I had using Disney's Dining Plan!  I highly recommend this restaurant, with or without Disney's Dining Plan!  If you are using Disney's Dining Plan, the value and quality of food your receive at The Contempo Cafe is outstanding!

Picture
Disney's Contempo Cafe, like its name indicates, has a contemporary feel and the menu is on electronic boards with color photos.  You then can place your order at the touch screens and head directly to a cashier.  Seating is in a casual 147-seat dining area with red and blue accents and views of the Disney monorail passing through the famous hotel.  Just over your shoulder will be Chef Mickeys, known for it's wonderful character meals and if you're lucky you may even catch a glimpse of Mickey and friends while waiting for your meal!

Prices are not on the menu boards but on the touch screens where you can order in Spanish or English.  Diners can choose a salad with dressing on the side, for instance, different kinds of cheeses for burgers or salad or chips with sandwiches.  And don't worry, if the touch screen intimidates you, there is always a friendly Disney castmember to walk you through the ordering process.
Picture
this is only half of the sandwich!
A pager blinks when your food is ready for pickup at the counter.  My daughter enjoyed the thin crust pizza while I had a hearty Turkey Sandwich with Brie, Apple Butter, Apples and Arugula on Challah Bread with a side of delicious housemade potato chips! And for dessert and don't forget dessert, I enjoyed the black forest cupcake and my daughter enjoyed the dirt and worms cupcake that was loaded with gummy worms!

If you are on the Disney Dining Plan, you won't want to miss Contempo Cafe for one of your Quick Service Meals!  The food was so fresh and had the best dessert selection. It's just a short monorail ride over from Magic Kingdom, so why not enjoy a delicious quick service meal here on your next visit!

Contempo Cafe is open from 7am-10pm, serving breakfast until 11am. The "grab n go" is open 6am-midnight.

The Facts

Overview: Disney's Pop Century Resort is a celebration of 20th century pop culture. The 2,880-room resort's larger-than-life "time capsules" showcase the popular toys, fads, dance crazes and catch phrases of the 20th century. How people lived. How they played. How they celebrated. Guests have the opportunity to live and play inside these unique time capsules and experience popular culture that defined the century.

Resort Description: Disney's Pop Century Resort features lodge buildings and furnishings inspired by different decades. Giant pop culture icons were constructed to celebrate the decade they were introduced in, or when they gained their greatest popularity. Some of these icons tower more than 60 feet.

Opening Date: Dec. 14, 2003

Location: 1050 Century Drive, Lake Buena Vista, Fla., 32830. Near Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex and Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort.

Features:

  • Accommodations: 2,880 guest rooms. Rooms are 260 square feet, with two double beds or one king bed, a table and two chairs, vanity area and sink with separate bathroom, 27-inch color television, in-room wall safe, telephones with voice mail and data port. Available on request: rooms accessible to guests with disabilities, hearing-impaired TDD telephones, visual smoke alarms, bed boards and bed rails, refrigerators (extra charge), cribs, iron and ironing board. Room furnishings include custom-designed and themed bed coverings, wall art and wallpaper borders.

  • Food and Beverage: Offerings include Everything Pop food court area; pizza delivery to guest rooms; and Petals Pool Bar (located adjacent to Hippy Dippy Pool).

  • Resort Shopping: A 5,000-square-foot retail center in Classic Hall offers resort-specific merchandise and Walt Disney World souvenirs.

  • Resort Recreation: Three feature pools -- the Bowling Pin Pool, the Hippy Dippy Pool and the Computer Pool; a kiddie pool; playground; and the Fast Forward arcade. Goofy stands watch over Pop Jet Playground, a playland of popping water located near the 1970s lodge buildings.

The Fun
  • The bowling pin icons tower more than 65 feet high. A regulation bowling pin is 15 inches tall.
  • If you count the giant bowling pin icons, there are nine standing around the resort. Where's the tenth? It's actually the bowling pin pool in the courtyard!

  • Take a closer look at the pool deck around the bowling pin pool and you'll spot the triangular lane markings that are seen on bowling alleys everywhere.

  • The Rubik's Cube icons reach a peak of 41 feet off the ground. By comparison, a Rubik's Cube puzzle toy stands nearly four inches at its tallest point.

  • The resort's 8-track tapes are more than 35 feet tall, with "tape" that is more than one-foot in width. A real 8-track tape is a mere five-and-one-quarter inches tall, with a tape that is only one-quarter inch wide.

  • The table soccer players are more than 12 feet tall, and the "toy" ball is more than two-and-one-half feet in diameter.

  • Nearly 125,000 gallons of paint were used to create the bright colors and tie-dyed hues on the buildings' interior and exterior walls.

  • In the 1960s area, giant "thumbprints" can be spotted on the ears of the elephant peeking out of the giant Play-Doh canister. And can you name the child depicted on the Play-Doh can? That's Play-Doh Pete!

  • The giant Big Wheel icon can "accommodate" a child rider that weighs up to 877 pounds (or so says the sticker on the towering riding toy). That matches the stickers that were affixed to the original Big Wheel toys of the 1970s that designated a "recommended child weight."

  • Service and equipment buildings are cleverly disguised all over the resort. At the 1950s bowling pin pool, the laundry looks like a bowling shoe storage bin. In the 1990s, an equipment building appears to be a larger-than-life stack of computer floppy disks.

  • The 1970s courtyard pays tribute to the age of disco, with a motion-based disco light mounted in the middle of the courtyard. This color-changing light sends streams of light across the '70s-inspired outdoor "dance floor."

VoluntEAR!
Pledges to lose weight or pay off debts typically find a way into conversations this time of year, as the anticipation of New Year’s resolutions approaches.  However, according to a study from Disney Parks and HandsOn Network, 2010 may see a surge of helping hands and giving hearts, as more families resolve to volunteer.

HandsOn Network, the nation’s largest volunteer network, is working with Disney to help make 2010 the ideal year to realize those goals and make volunteering a family resolution.

Beginning on Jan 1, 2010, Disney Parks officially launches “Give a Day, Get a Disney Day,” a first-of-its-kind initiative with the help of HandsOn Network.  Through the program, Disney Parks hopes to inspire 1 million people to perform a day of volunteer service for a participating organization in 2010 by giving them a free, one-day admission ticket to a Walt Disney World Resort or Disneyland Resort theme park.  Families are encouraged to visit www.DisneyParks.com to research and sign up for a volunteer opportunity in their local community.

“Disney Parks, through HandsOn Network, is making it easy for volunteers of all ages to find an organization in need,” said Maggie Jones Patton, executive director of Youth HandsOn Network, the youth activating arm of HON.  “There has never been a better time to start a new tradition of volunteering together as Disney Parks celebrates good deeds with a free Disney theme park ticket.”

How to Get Involved
HandsOn Network has 250 on-the-ground volunteer action centers across the country and connects volunteers to more than 70,000 non-profit agencies that need help. With Americans already thinking about various volunteer opportunities as their New Year’s resolutions, 28 percent would be most interested in packaging donations at a food pantry or soup kitchen or helping out at a clothing or toy drive, the survey said.

Below are additional examples of opportunities available through HandsOn Network and its local affiliates. Families are encouraged to visit www.DisneyParks.com for additional ways to help.

  • Plant, weed and tend a community garden
  • Read to or spend time with children at a local daycare center or shelter
  • Assemble backpacks or supplies for under-resourced schools
  • Help spruce up a local school, library or outdoor park
  • Visit nursing homes to play games, make crafts or share talents with senior residents
